New PID Life Index Leaflet on SCID Screening

To mark International Neonatal Screening Day, IPOPI is pleased to launch its new leaflet, Global Access to SCID Newborn Screening: A PID Life Index Perspective. Drawing on data from the PID Life Index, the publication provides a global snapshot of how countries are implementing newborn screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), highlighting both encouraging progress and the challenges that remain.

For babies born with SCID, a rare and life-threatening primary immunodeficiency, early diagnosis can be life-saving. Newborn screening allows affected infants to be identified before symptoms develop, enabling timely treatment and greatly improving health outcomes.

The leaflet shows that an increasing number of countries have introduced SCID newborn screening programmes, demonstrating growing recognition of the value of early detection. At the same time, it reveals important disparities: while some countries have nationwide programmes, others are still in the pilot phase, offer screening only in certain regions, or have yet to implement it.

By bringing these data together, the leaflet provides a valuable resource for patient organisations, healthcare professionals, and policymakers working to expand equitable access to newborn screening worldwide.

On this International Neonatal Screening Day, IPOPI celebrates the progress achieved so far while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that every newborn, regardless of where they are born, has the opportunity to benefit from early diagnosis and timely treatment.
