In this dynamic session, Dr Cecilia Poli will explore how calculated globulin screening is being implemented worldwide to diagnose patients with antibody deficiencies. Prof Stephen Jolles will keep the debate lively by addressing potential challenges and opportunities for improving this diagnostic tool.

The IPOPI Hard Talks series is designed for clinicians, nurses, and patient group leaders interested in PID diagnosis and clinical management. Featuring interactive discussions and a lively debate between expert speakers, “PID Hard Talks” aims to address the more challenging topics and increase expertise on crucial clinical care issues.

The session will be moderated by Martine Pergent (IPOPI President) and Dr Nizar Mahlaoui (Chair of IPOPI MAP).

Meet Our Speakers

Dr Cecilia Poli

Dr Cecilia Poli is the Director of the Program of Immunogenetics and Translational Immunology (PIGIT) at the Institute of Science and Innovation in Medicine, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile. She trained in Paediatrics, Rheumatology, and Immunology at the Universidad de Chile and earned a PhD in Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine, working in Dr. Jordan Orange’s laboratory. Upon returning to Chile, she founded a diagnostic laboratory and initiated a research program focused on primary immunodeficiencies.

Her clinical practice focuses on diagnosing and managing patients with inborn errors of immunity, including rare autoinflammatory conditions. Her research seeks to identify novel primary immunodeficiencies and elucidate mechanisms of immune dysregulation, autoimmunity, and autoinflammation. Cecilia heads the Jeffrey Modell Centre for Diagnosis and Research in Primary Immunodeficiencies. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and an active member of ESID, CIS, and LASID, where she serves as Secretary.

Prof Stephen Jolles

Prof Stephen Jolles is a Consultant Clinical Immunologist and Honorary Professor at the University Hospital of Wales and Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales. He is Clinical Lead in the Immunodeficiency Centre of Wales and Co-Director of the Hub Immunology Diagnostic Laboratory of Wales and Adult Clinical Lead of the SWAN (Syndrome Without A Name) clinic.

Dr Jolles trained in immunology and allergy and obtained his PhD at the National Institute for Medical Research, London. He has a particular interest in the management of primary and secondary immunodeficiency and research interests in improving diagnostics, screening tools for early diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. This work has supported national and international guideline/policy development in complement deficiency, primary and secondary immunodeficiency, screening for antibody deficiency, hereditary angioedema, immunoglobulin therapy and COVID.
